The High Museum of Art presents
New Acquisitions: Photography, on view from June 12 to September 6, 2026, offering a considered look at how a collection evolves over time. Drawing from decades of deliberate acquisitions, the exhibition reflects the institution’s sustained commitment to photography as both a historical record and a living, changing form. Since acquiring its first photograph in 1973 and establishing a dedicated department in 1993, the museum has shaped a collection that speaks to shifting cultural landscapes while honoring the medium’s diverse traditions.
This presentation brings forward works that have not previously been exhibited, revealing new dimensions of the museum’s holdings. Rather than adhering to a single narrative, the selection emphasizes range and dialogue, placing established figures alongside contemporary voices. Artists such as
Bruce Davidson,
Dawoud Bey, Catherine Opie, and
Richard Learoyd appear in conversation with emerging and mid-career practitioners including Rahim Fortune and Nikita Gale. Together, their works reflect an expansive view of photographic practice, spanning portraiture, conceptual approaches, and investigations of place and identity.
The exhibition underscores the idea that building a collection involves more than accumulation; it requires a curatorial vision attuned to both continuity and change. By integrating recent acquisitions into its broader holdings, the museum highlights how contemporary works reshape the understanding of earlier ones. Themes of representation, memory, and social experience emerge across generations, revealing how photography continues to respond to the complexities of its time.
Through this focused yet wide-ranging presentation, the High Museum of Art offers insight into the evolving priorities of its photography department.
New Acquisitions: Photography positions the act of collecting as an ongoing, dynamic process, one that not only preserves the past but also anticipates the future of the medium.
