The
Albumen Gallery programme for
UNSEEN at Art Rotterdam 2026 presents a compelling showcase of three iconic mid-20th century photographers:
Marilyn Stafford,
Lee Miller, and
Colin Jones. At first glance, their works span a broad spectrum of photographic genres, from fashion and portraiture to social documentary. Yet, a closer look reveals fascinating intersections in their thematic focus and artistic approach, offering a rich field for comparison and exploration.
Marilyn Stafford and Lee Miller, both American-born photographers, made their names largely in Europe. Their careers evolved from fashion photography into socially engaged documentary work, capturing intimate moments and untold stories with sensitivity and artistic rigor. British photographer Colin Jones, initially grounded in photojournalism, developed an enduring legacy through his socially observant documentation of Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. His images go far beyond traditional reportage, providing a deeply empathetic and visually compelling portrait of everyday life, culture, and society.
The juxtaposition of these three photographers in a single exhibition highlights the fluidity and evolving nature of 20th-century photography. For Colin Jones, social documentary work led naturally to street photography, immersing him in the daily lives of his subjects. In parallel, Marilyn Stafford and Lee Miller represent a generation of fashion photographers who revolutionized the field by taking fashion out of the studio and into real-world locations. By borrowing techniques from documentary and street photography, they blurred the lines between staged glamour and lived reality, creating images that were both stylish and socially resonant.
This presentation at UNSEEN emphasizes the cross-pollination of genres and the shared visual language between seemingly distinct photographic practices. Visitors will encounter a narrative that demonstrates how mid-20th century photography was not confined to rigid categories but rather existed on a continuum, where fashion, documentary, and street photography intersected to create powerful, enduring works of art.
By exhibiting Stafford, Miller, and Jones together, the Albumen Gallery offers a unique opportunity to explore the interconnected evolution of photographic techniques and storytelling, underscoring the lasting influence of these photographers on contemporary visual culture and the ongoing dialogue between fashion, social documentary, and street photography.
