Galerie Richard

Galerie Richard, founded by Jean-Luc and Takako Richard, has been a dynamic presence in Paris's contemporary art world since its inception in 1989. Initially established under the name Galerie OZ in the Bastille district, the gallery was born from a passion to support emerging international artists early in their careers, often before they gained institutional recognition. From the beginning, the Richards cultivated a bold and exploratory curatorial approach, introducing European audiences to influential yet underrepresented movements, such as New York’s Maximalist art scene.

In 2002, the gallery relocated to the Île Saint-Louis and rebranded as Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard, ushering in a renewed focus on contemporary painting. With artists like Shirley Kaneda, Paul Henry Ramirez, and Yuichi Higashionna, the gallery emphasized color, abstraction, and conceptual engagement. Four years later, the gallery moved again—this time to the Marais—doubling its exhibition space and further expanding its influence. Membership in the Comité Professionnel des Galeries d’Art followed shortly thereafter, cementing its standing among France’s premier galleries.

The gallery's programming continued to grow in ambition and reach. In 2011, it opened a second location in New York, forming the bi-continental Galerie Richard. This transatlantic presence enabled collaborative exhibitions and cross-cultural dialogue, highlighted by retrospectives and major projects with artists such as Takesada Matsutani and John M Armleder.

Galerie Richard has since expanded into digital photography, sculpture, and mixed media, representing artists like Dionisio González and Jeremy Thomas. With a roster that bridges generations and styles—from Ron Gorchov and Frank Stella to Kim Young-Hun and Julie Oppermann—the gallery remains committed to innovation without losing sight of artistic legacy.

Today, Galerie Richard stands as a testament to long-term vision, nurturing both emerging voices and established names while connecting Paris and New York through a shared commitment to contemporary art.
