We Cover New York: The Photo League at the Columbus Museum of Art revisits one of the most influential photography collectives of the 20th century. On view in Gallery 5 through June 21, 2026, the rotating installation draws from CMA’s Photo League Collection and focuses on a group that shaped both the social and artistic role of photography in New York City.
Founded in 1936 and active until 1951, the Photo League brought together photographers who shared darkroom access, lectures, classes and exhibitions while also engaging with the social realities of their time. Members included
Berenice Abbott,
Sid Grossman, Erika Stone,
Lisette Model and
Aaron Siskind, all of whom helped push photography beyond simple documentation. The League operated as a working community, with annual dues kept low enough to make participation accessible, and that structure helped support a lively exchange of ideas and practice.
The works in this installation reflect the League’s interest in city life, labor, neighborhood scenes and everyday people. That emphasis gave the group a strong documentary edge, but it also helped define a more modern understanding of photography as an expressive and socially aware medium. The images on view connect artistic ambition with public observation, showing how photographers used the city as both subject and setting.
The installation is dedicated to John Kobacker, whose long support for photography played an important role in bringing the Photo League Collection to the museum. His name adds another layer to the exhibition’s history, linking the preservation of the work to the people who recognized its value long after the League itself had ended.
Seen today,
We Cover New York restores attention to a collective that helped shape American documentary photography while also building a shared culture around the medium. The exhibition keeps that history visible through a focused selection of works that remain direct, observant and grounded in city life.
