E.A. Kahane: Heart of the Race, Master Mechanics of the Mille Miglia, presented at the Sarasota Art Museum from April 25 through September 26, 2027, offers a striking reorientation of one of the world’s most celebrated automotive events. Marking the centenary of Italy’s legendary Mille Miglia, the exhibition moves beyond the polished surfaces of vintage cars to focus instead on the individuals whose expertise sustains them: the mechanics working behind the scenes.
Through more than one hundred black-and-white photographs, E.A. Kahane documents the intensity and rhythm of a demanding five-day journey stretching from Brescia to Rome and back. The images reveal moments rarely visible to spectators—hands stained with oil, tools scattered in improvised workspaces, and faces marked by concentration and fatigue. These scenes unfold in garages, roadside stops, and temporary pits, where precision and instinct guide every decision. Kahane’s approach strips away spectacle to uncover the human infrastructure that makes the race possible.
The Mille Miglia, first held in 1927, carries a storied legacy tied to Italian engineering and endurance racing. While its iconic vehicles often command attention, this exhibition redirects that gaze toward the mastery required to maintain them. Kahane’s portraits highlight nearly eighty mechanics from across the globe, many of whom inherit their knowledge through generations. Their presence underscores a continuity of craftsmanship that persists in an age increasingly defined by automation.
Visually, the work embraces a documentary sensibility shaped by strong contrasts and careful framing. The absence of color emphasizes texture and gesture, allowing the viewer to focus on the tactile relationship between people and machines. There is a quiet dignity in these photographs, a recognition that the race’s true momentum depends as much on patience and discipline as on speed.
Curated by Virginia Shearer, the exhibition positions these mechanics not as peripheral figures but as central protagonists. In doing so,
Heart of the Race reframes a familiar narrative, revealing that behind every celebrated machine stands a network of skilled hands, working tirelessly to keep history in motion.
