The Barnes Foundation
The Barnes Foundation
Philadelphia - 2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway - PA 19130
The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia stands as a living testament to the belief that art can transform lives and enrich communities. Founded in 1922 by Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a visionary collector and progressive thinker, the institution has long been dedicated to advancing education and fostering a deep appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture. Dr. Barnes imagined the Foundation as a place where individuals of all backgrounds could learn to see and understand art, and his commitment to education and social equity still shapes the Barnes today.

The collection Dr. Barnes assembled is one of the most extraordinary in the world, featuring masterworks by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Van Gogh, among others. Yet the galleries are not organized by artist or period. Instead, paintings are arranged in unconventional groupings—alongside African sculpture, Native American jewelry, antique ironwork, and decorative arts—creating an environment that encourages close observation and open dialogue.

At the heart of the Barnes is a unique educational philosophy rooted in the progressive teachings of John Dewey. This method encourages learners to engage deeply with art through direct experience, critical thinking, and discussion. Dr. Barnes originally brought these lessons to his factory workers, pausing production for art discussions that included both women and African Americans, a radical gesture for the time.

Today, the Foundation continues to honor its founder’s legacy through programs that serve thousands of students and adult learners each year. Since moving to its new home on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in 2012, the Barnes has expanded its outreach, offering exhibitions, classes, and community partnerships across Philadelphia. Every aspect of the Barnes—from its galleries to its gardens—reflects a commitment to accessibility, education, and the belief that art belongs to everyone.
