The Broad

The Broad is a contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles dedicated to making art accessible, engaging, and transformative for a global audience. Founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the museum houses over 2,000 works of art from the 1950s to today, forming one of the most comprehensive collections of postwar and contemporary art in the world.

At the heart of The Broad’s mission is the belief that art should be freely available to the public. Offering free general admission, the museum invites visitors to engage with influential works by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Kara Walker, and Andy Warhol. The collection emphasizes in-depth representation of key artists, enabling audiences to trace developments in contemporary practice across multiple decades.

The museum also serves as the headquarters for The Broad Art Foundation’s global lending library, an initiative begun in 1984 to support museums around the world by providing access to significant contemporary works. Through this program, the collection continues to foster connections and dialogue across cultural institutions internationally.

The Broad’s distinctive architecture, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, features a striking honeycomb-like "veil" and a unique “vault” that stores the collection. With two floors of gallery space and innovative visitor engagement programs, the 120,000-square-foot building is both a cultural landmark and a center for discovery.

In addition to its exhibitions, The Broad hosts talks, performances, and educational events that challenge and inspire. These programs aim to deepen public understanding of contemporary art and encourage conversations about the social, political, and emotional contexts that shape it.
