San Francisco - 458 Geary Street - CA 94108
The San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAE), founded in 1983 by Theron Kabrich and Jim Hartley, has long been a global leader in the presentation and sale of Pop Culture art and photography. From its inception, the gallery carved out a unique niche by celebrating the visual language of music, film, and cultural history. Over the decades, SFAE has hosted more than one hundred major exhibitions, each one shining a light on the imagery that shaped collective memory and continues to resonate with audiences around the world.

Photography has been at the heart of this legacy. SFAE is especially renowned for its pioneering role in recognizing the cultural and artistic significance of rock ‘n’ roll photography. The gallery has represented iconic photographers whose work captured the raw energy and charisma of legendary performers, elevating images once seen as promotional material into celebrated works of fine art. This commitment reached a milestone with the record-breaking $900,000 sale of Iain Macmillan’s complete seven-piece set of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover session, still the highest price ever achieved for rock ‘n’ roll photography. Such landmark events not only underscored the importance of these images but also affirmed photography’s role as a vital document of cultural history.

Beyond music, SFAE has handled historic collections that chronicle film, sports, civil rights, and social movements, always with a focus on photography’s ability to preserve and amplify key cultural narratives. Whether presenting rare portraits of musicians, behind-the-scenes film stills, or images of transformative public figures, the gallery has consistently emphasized photography’s power to connect audiences across generations.

Today, SFAE remains a premier destination for collectors, offering works authenticated and accompanied by certificates of authenticity. Its photography collection continues to define the gallery’s reputation, standing as a testament to the enduring impact of images that capture the spirit of an era.
