Cheim & Read
New York - 547 West 25 Street - NY 10001
Founded in 1997 by John Cheim and Howard Read, Cheim & Read quickly established itself as one of New York’s most ambitious contemporary art galleries. Known for museum-quality exhibitions, the gallery balanced a commitment to emerging voices with presentations of historically significant artists. While it became particularly recognized for representing figures such as Louise Bourgeois, Sean Scully, and Lynda Benglis, photography also occupied a meaningful place within its program, adding another dimension to its curatorial scope.

From its early days in Chelsea on West 23rd Street, Cheim & Read made photography part of its exhibition vision, recognizing the medium as central to contemporary practice. The gallery showcased photographic works not as secondary to painting or sculpture, but as essential contributions to modern visual language. Its programming highlighted the ways in which photography could stand alongside large-scale painting, conceptual installation, or monumental sculpture, creating dialogues across media. Through both solo presentations and curated group exhibitions, Cheim & Read gave visibility to photographers whose practices challenged convention and expanded the boundaries of the art form.

The gallery’s photography collection reflected this dedication. By acquiring and exhibiting works that spanned from documentary approaches to highly experimental practices, Cheim & Read reinforced photography’s evolving role within art history. Whether through black-and-white studies that emphasized formal rigor or vibrant contemporary projects that spoke to cultural shifts, the gallery treated photography as a field deserving of serious critical and commercial attention. Many of these works later entered important private and museum collections, underscoring the gallery’s role as a tastemaker in this area.

Although Cheim & Read concluded its public exhibition program in 2023, the legacy of its photography initiatives remains part of its lasting impact. The collection and the works it placed continue to resonate within the broader art world, reminding audiences of the gallery’s forward-thinking embrace of photography as an equal partner to other contemporary art forms. In this way, the gallery’s influence endures beyond its physical space.
