Footwork: Where We Gather, on view from February 26 through July 19, 2026 at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, explores the cultural power of sport through photography. Presented in the museum’s John Howett Works on Paper Gallery, the exhibition brings together new images by Atlanta-based artist Sheila Pree Bright alongside historic works by veteran sports photographer Walter Iooss. Through this dialogue between past and present, the exhibition examines how sports shape communal identity and create shared spaces of belonging.
Two iconic photographs by Iooss, drawn from the museum’s permanent collection, anchor the exhibition historically. Among them is the celebrated image
The Catch, capturing the dramatic touchdown reception by Dwight Clark from quarterback Joe Montana during the 1982 NFC Championship game. Long regarded as one of the defining moments in American football history, the photograph stands as a classic example of sports photojournalism, freezing a decisive instant that resonates far beyond the field.
In contrast to the action-focused tradition of sports photography, Bright’s new series
Where We Gather turns attention toward the communities that animate sporting events. Her photographs observe the rituals of fandom across Atlanta, documenting the collective energy that forms around teams and stadiums. The images show moments such as fans marching toward a match with supporters of Atlanta United FC, young admirers meeting A. J. Terrell at a training camp, or supporters gathering in neighborhood spaces before games played by the Atlanta Hawks.
Several of Bright’s large-scale photographs appear within the museum’s classical Greek and Roman sculpture galleries, creating an unexpected dialogue between contemporary fan culture and ancient traditions of athletic celebration. The installation suggests that the emotional bonds formed around sport—anticipation, loyalty, and collective pride—echo patterns that have shaped human gatherings for centuries.
Part of the broader Footwork initiative at Emory University, the exhibition reflects the city’s vibrant sports landscape as Atlanta prepares to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Through these photographs, sport emerges not only as spectacle but as a powerful social ritual where strangers become community and shared emotion becomes a language of connection.
