Portrait of a Nation: 2025 Honorees, on view from December 12, 2025 through November 15, 2026 at the National Portrait Gallery, celebrates individuals whose ideas, achievements, and leadership have left a lasting mark on American life. Presented in the First Floor North Corridor, the exhibition continues a tradition begun in 2015, using portraiture to recognize figures whose influence extends well beyond their respective fields. Through painting and photography, these works affirm the enduring role of portraiture in shaping collective memory and national identity.
The 2025 honorees reflect a wide spectrum of American experience and accomplishment. Jamie Dimon is portrayed as a defining voice in modern business, his likeness conveying both authority and responsibility in an era shaped by global finance. Temple Grandin’s portrait honors a career devoted to innovation, empathy, and scientific rigor, acknowledging her transformative impact on animal science and agricultural practice. Joy Harjo, the first Native American to serve as U.S. Poet Laureate, is presented as a cultural bridge-builder whose words carry history, resilience, and music across generations. Steven Spielberg’s portrait reflects the imagination of a storyteller whose films have profoundly shaped how Americans see themselves and their past.
Each portrait is the result of a close collaboration between subject and artist, emphasizing not only public achievement but also personal character. The exhibition underscores how contemporary portraiture can move beyond likeness to suggest inner life, values, and legacy. Taken together, the works form a conversation across disciplines, illustrating how leadership, creativity, and vision emerge in many forms yet contribute to a shared national narrative.
