Maine College of Art & Design

The Photography Program at the Maine College of Art & Design (MECA\&D) offers an immersive and forward-thinking approach to photographic education, grounded in both historical traditions and contemporary practice. Since its founding in 1882, the college has remained dedicated to cultivating artistic excellence and creative innovation within a supportive yet challenging environment. Photography students are encouraged to develop a personal voice while mastering the technical and conceptual tools necessary to succeed as artists and visual storytellers.

Each semester, the curriculum combines analog and digital processes, allowing students to explore the full breadth of photographic expression. Courses may include large-scale digital printing in the school’s state-of-the-art lab alongside hands-on work with historic photographic techniques such as Wet-Plate Collodion, Kallitypes, and Platinum & Palladium printing. This blend of old and new encourages a deeper understanding of photography’s evolution and its relevance in contemporary art and culture.

MECA\&D provides exceptional access to professional equipment and facilities. Students can borrow cameras across all formats—from 35mm film to medium and large format digital systems—and work in two fully equipped darkrooms featuring 28 enlarger stations. The digital output lab includes wide-format Epson printers, color-calibrated monitors, high-end Macs, and film scanners. The lighting studio, stocked with professional-grade systems and modifiers, offers an ideal environment to experiment with composition, texture, and light.

With small class sizes and close faculty mentorship, students receive individualized feedback and ample studio access to refine their craft. The program culminates in the creation of an exhibition-ready body of work that reflects each student’s conceptual and technical mastery. Graduates of MECA\&D’s Photography Program go on to thrive as fine artists, commercial photographers, editors, and filmmakers, often securing internships or professional opportunities even before graduation through the school’s Artists at Work initiative.
