There are places that, on a map, are merely geographic coordinates, but which, in the reality of the human experience, become true centers of gravity. In Rio de Janeiro,
Posto 5 is one such place: a tipping point where the ocean meets the asphalt, where the city strips away its artifice to reveal its raw truth. It was from this dynamic intersection that Manuel Besse drew the essence of his photographic vision.
Founded in May 2025 and physically established in Rio de Janeiro, Posto 5 stands today as far more than a distribution platform: it is a laboratory for visual storytelling organized as an auteur collective—a committed witness composing, month after month, a sensitive photographic inventory of our shared humanity.

A Genesis Forged in Reality and Adventure
The DNA of Posto 5 draws its strength from a life journey without compromise. For forty years,
Manuel Besse has traversed the most singular regions of our planet: from the wild meanders of the Amazon to the depths of the Serra Pelada gold mine; from the perilous descents of the Maroni River with the French Foreign Legion to the arid expanses of the Sahara, as well as crisis zones in Somalia and the Central African Republic. His relationship with Brazil, which he has roamed tirelessly since 1982, serves as the bedrock of this vision.
This raw experience has translated into a rigorous body of work. La Terre de Nod (The Land of Nod), a multi-award-winning long-term project, explores the dark paths of existence with almost meditative depth. Through a precise black-and-white aesthetic, Besse captured the human condition in its most fragile state—a series that echoes his ecological commitment in Mata Atlântica. This reportage, centered on the condition of seasonal workers within large Brazilian plantations, is far more than a simple denunciation: it is a visceral immersion into the bond—often tragic—that unites man with the land he cultivates.
This quest for truth continues today with Le Dernier Souffle (The Last Breath). Begun in May 2025 and scheduled through 2029, this monumental social and environmental fresco focuses on the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) in Brazil. This long-term reportage documents the agony of a fragile ecosystem—a threatened lung where every vanishing acre represents a breath of life extinguished. It is this same commitment to the long view that guides all the collective's authors, such as
Flavio Sousa Cruz, whose exploration of the arid lands of the Sertão provides a geographical depth essential to our inventory.

A Dialogue with EXT Magazine Brésil and All About Photo
This ongoing memory only finds its true meaning when shared. Our privileged collaboration with EXT Magazine Brésil acts as a catalyst, an essential relay for this vision.
This partnership was born from a convergence of views with the magazine’s founders, Marco Antonio Perna and Ricardo Q.T. Rodrigues, joined in this dynamic effort by Flavio Sousa Cruz. Their shared commitment to auteur photography in Brazil immediately resonated with the collective’s philosophy. As Manuel Besse emphasizes: Our collaboration with
EXT Magazine Brésil is not merely a showcase; it is the heartbeat of a perpetual exchange—a dynamic where photography and Brazilian culture feed off one another to constantly redefine our vision of the real.
In this same spirit of openness, we express our gratitude to
All About Photo. Through their constant kindness and enlightened view of global photography, they offer a precious platform for diverse authors and actively participate in making photography a universal language, free of borders.

A Call to Vision: Building Tomorrow
Today, Posto 5 is taking a decisive step in its expansion. While Rio de Janeiro remains the cradle and physical anchor of our structure, our horizon is the entire planet. The collective is opening its doors to photographers from all over the world. Whether they are emerging talents or established figures, we invite all who share this ethics of the long view to join us. Integrating into Posto 5 means becoming part of a lineage of witnesses who reject the spectacular in favor of depth, where every shutter release becomes an act of understanding.
If your practice of the image is guided by the desire to document, to reveal the sacred in the ordinary, and to place your narrative in the wake of the great humanistic chronicles, your place is by our side. Together, we will continue to traverse the roads, document the vitality of peoples, and build a collective memory.
Posto 5: Giving a soul to reality.
