The San Joaquin Delta College Photography Program provides students with a comprehensive education that balances traditional and digital approaches to the medium. At the core of the program is the belief that photography is both a technical craft and a powerful tool for self-expression. Students are encouraged to explore their creativity, sharpen their visual awareness, and master the technical skills that are essential in both artistic and professional photography settings.

The Photography AA degree emphasizes versatility and depth, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation for advanced study or immediate entry into the workforce. Courses cover a wide range of topics including black-and-white darkroom techniques, digital imaging, studio lighting, and photographic composition. By engaging with both analog and digital tools, students gain an appreciation for the history of the medium while staying current with modern technology and industry standards.

In addition to technical skills, the program fosters critical thinking and conceptual development. Students are encouraged to push creative boundaries and use photography as a means to explore personal, social, and cultural issues. Assignments and critiques are designed not only to improve visual communication but also to prepare students for real-world applications, from fine art exhibitions to commercial photography projects.

The exhibition is timed to commemorate two important milestones - the 70th anniversary of the landmark publication of Parks’ images of the segregated South in Life magazine and the 20th anniversary of the founding of The Gordon Parks Foundation. The South in Color will present more than thirty photographs from the artist’s Segregation Story series and debut a brand-new portfolio published by the Foundation.
