Venice Arts

Venice Arts was founded in 1993 with a clear vision: to use the power of art and visual storytelling to enrich the lives of young people and strengthen community bonds. Emerging from a time when Los Angeles’ public schools were cutting arts education, the organization sought to create an inclusive neighborhood arts center that could nurture creativity, inspire self-expression, and provide opportunities for those who might otherwise be left without access to the arts.

Photography played a vital role from the very beginning. The organization’s first project, *Venice Through Our Eyes*, introduced young participants to photography as a way to document and share their world. That workshop not only gave ten students cameras and skills but also instilled the idea that photography could be both a personal and collective tool for empowerment. This foundation evolved into Venice Arts’ strong emphasis on participatory media, where youth are encouraged to create their own stories and develop their voices through the lens.

Today, Venice Arts continues to place photography at the heart of its programs. Through Media Arts Mentoring & Education, students aged 8–18 receive instruction in photography alongside film, animation, and other creative practices. They are mentored by professional photographers and artists who provide guidance, technical training, and inspiration. The curriculum balances skill-building with storytelling, enabling participants to produce images that reflect their personal perspectives while also engaging broader social issues.

For older students, the Center for Creative Workforce Equity expands on these foundations by preparing young adults for creative careers. Workshops, internships, and portfolio development give participants the tools needed to pursue higher education or professional opportunities in photography and media. Alongside this, Venice Arts’ gallery and public programs showcase student work in exhibitions and screenings, fostering dialogue between artists and the community.
