The Photography Program within the Art Department at Skidmore College offers students a rigorous and inspiring environment to develop their creative and technical vision within the broad framework of a liberal arts education. Rooted in both conceptual inquiry and hands-on practice, the program encourages students to engage deeply with photography as both an art form and a medium for critical reflection on culture, society, and personal experience.

Students begin their journey with foundational courses such as Drawing I and introductory photography classes, where they gain a solid understanding of composition, lighting, camera operation, and darkroom or digital techniques. From there, they progress into more advanced courses exploring digital imaging, studio photography, experimental and large-format practices, and photographic theory. This progression allows them to balance technical mastery with intellectual exploration, learning to express complex ideas through the photographic image.

The photography concentration exists within a larger studio art curriculum that includes ten distinct areas—Ceramics, Communication Design, Drawing, Digital Media, Fiber Arts, Jewelry and Metals, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, and Sculpture. This diversity fosters interdisciplinary experimentation, enabling photography students to combine lens-based media with other art forms.

By their junior and senior years, students narrow their focus to build a cohesive body of work in preparation for the Senior Thesis Exhibition, held annually at the Tang Teaching Museum. This capstone experience emphasizes professional presentation and critical engagement, preparing graduates for careers in the arts or further study in graduate programs.

Beyond the classroom, Skidmore offers numerous internship opportunities both on and off campus. Students gain real-world experience working with institutions such as the Tang Museum, BRIC in Brooklyn, and Arts Unbound in New Jersey. Through this combination of coursework, studio practice, and experiential learning, Skidmore College’s Photography Program cultivates thoughtful, technically adept, and creatively ambitious photographers ready to contribute to the evolving landscape of visual arts.
