The Photography Program at Eastern Kentucky University’s School of Art and Design offers students a comprehensive and creative education rooted in both technical mastery and artistic exploration. As part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art/Design Studio, the photography concentration allows students to shape their studies around their individual creative goals. Whether aspiring to work in fine art, commercial, or documentary photography, students benefit from a curriculum that emphasizes experimentation, craftsmanship, and conceptual development.
The journey begins with ART280: Photography I, where students learn the fundamentals of manual camera operation and traditional darkroom processes. Working with black and white film, they gain a deep understanding of exposure, composition, and printing—skills that continue to influence their approach to digital techniques. As they progress through the program, students explore advanced courses that incorporate digital photography, studio lighting, color management, and alternative photographic processes. Each class builds upon a balance of technical skill and creative expression, encouraging students to develop a personal photographic style and voice.
Eastern Kentucky University’s photography facilities support both analog and digital practices, providing access to fully equipped studios, darkrooms, and computer labs with industry-standard software. Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to exhibit their work, collaborate with peers in other art disciplines, and engage with the broader art community through visiting artist lectures and workshops.
The School of Art and Design fosters an environment that values creativity, cultural awareness, and communication. Faculty members—who are practicing artists and scholars—mentor students through both technical challenges and conceptual growth. Graduates of the EKU Photography Program leave with a refined artistic portfolio, strong visual literacy, and the professional readiness to pursue careers in photography, design, media production, or further graduate study.
