The Photography and Graphics Technology Program at Washburn Institute of Technology offers a dynamic education for students interested in combining creativity, visual storytelling, and technical skill. Designed for those who are both artistic and technologically inclined, the program bridges the gap between traditional visual arts and modern digital production. Through a balanced curriculum, students explore the interconnected worlds of photography, design, and print, gaining the practical skills needed to thrive in today’s creative industries.

The 48-credit technical certificate introduces students to the essential tools and concepts of visual communication. Courses focus on mastering key Adobe software programs—InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop—while also emphasizing digital photography techniques. Students learn how to capture, edit, and refine images for use in design and print projects, ensuring they understand the complete creative process from concept to finished product. This hands-on training is reinforced through practical assignments, design projects, and internship opportunities that simulate real-world professional environments.

Photography is an integral part of the program, providing students with a strong foundation in composition, lighting, and digital image processing. By understanding how photography complements graphic design, students are able to produce cohesive visual campaigns that meet both aesthetic and commercial goals. The program’s secondary focus on printing introduces students to production workflows and output methods used in professional studios, agencies, and publishing houses.

Full-time students can complete the program in just one year, while part-time and high school students can progress over four semesters. Graduates leave Washburn Tech prepared for entry-level positions in design firms, internal creative departments, or media companies. Additionally, those wishing to continue their studies may apply their credits toward an associate’s degree at Washburn University. The program’s blend of artistry, photography, and technology provides an ideal foundation for a successful creative career.

The exhibition is timed to commemorate two important milestones - the 70th anniversary of the landmark publication of Parks’ images of the segregated South in Life magazine and the 20th anniversary of the founding of The Gordon Parks Foundation. The South in Color will present more than thirty photographs from the artist’s Segregation Story series and debut a brand-new portfolio published by the Foundation.
