At Salt Lake Community College, the Photography Program offers students an immersive and practical education in the visual arts, centered on mastering the art and craft of image-making. Designed for both aspiring professionals and creative enthusiasts, the program emphasizes photography as a powerful form of storytelling and communication—an essential skill across industries such as visual media, advertising, design, and film. Through a balance of artistic exploration and technical instruction, SLCC prepares students to translate ideas into compelling visual narratives.

The Photography Foundation Academic Certificate provides a structured pathway for developing strong photographic proficiency. Students gain hands-on experience with both digital and analog cameras, learning how to control light, composition, and exposure to create meaningful and technically sound images. Coursework integrates training in digital workflow, color management, and post-production editing, as well as traditional darkroom practices that connect students to the roots of photographic expression. This dual emphasis allows learners to appreciate the evolution of the medium while adapting to modern industry standards.

Beyond technique, the SLCC Photography Program encourages a deep engagement with creativity and visual literacy. Students learn to analyze imagery, understand visual culture, and apply conceptual thinking to their own projects. The program’s experienced faculty—composed of practicing photographers and visual artists—provide mentorship through critiques, workshops, and portfolio development sessions, helping students refine their artistic voices and prepare for professional opportunities.

Graduates of the program emerge with a well-rounded understanding of photography’s role in contemporary media. Whether seeking to enter the workforce in fields such as editorial photography, marketing, or visual production—or planning to continue their education toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in Visual Art & Design—students leave SLCC equipped with the skills, confidence, and creative insight to excel in the ever-evolving world of photography.

Vanessa Paradis: Paradissime
Since her sensational debut at age 14 with the inevitable “Joe le taxi,” Vanessa Paradis has entered our lives and is now part of our cultural landscape, whether through music, cinema, or fashion... Through her work, her consistency, and her grace, she has won over even the most reluctant and become an important and respected figure. A muse to many musicians and filmmakers, her unique photogenic qualities also inspired the greatest photographers, starting with Jean-Baptiste Mondino, when she collaborated with Serge Gainsbourg in 1990 on the song “Tandem” and the video that accompanied its release. The famous rock photographer Claude Gassian followed her on the tour for the album “Natural High” and became a close collaborator, documenting her life on tour and the emotions she shared with her audience. As for Ellen von Unwerth, she captured Vanessa's beauty, imagination, and sensuality in numerous sessions, each more surprising than the last. The wonderful Paolo Roversi, also inspired by her elegance, captured the intensity of her gaze like no one else. I also think of Kate Barry, who photographed her in the 2000s, half-elf, half-dancer, presenting an unexpected and captivating facet of the artist. We are therefore taking advantage of the release of her seventh studio album, “Le retour des beaux jours,” on Barclay to pay her a fervent tribute and share her extraordinary life in photos with the public.
