The University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art, Art History and Design offers a forward-looking Photography and Videography program that bridges traditional photographic techniques with contemporary digital practices. Rooted in the fundamentals of visual storytelling, the program teaches students how to craft images that communicate emotion, narrative, and cultural insight. While embracing the possibilities of digital media, it remains deeply connected to photography’s origins—capturing light, framing a moment, and revealing human experience through visual composition.
Students in the Photography and Videography emphasis explore a curriculum designed to develop both technical expertise and conceptual awareness. Courses introduce camera operation, lighting, composition, and post-production editing, alongside explorations in video production and sound design. This combination of still and moving image practice allows students to work fluidly across mediums, shaping stories that reflect both personal expression and collective meaning.
Throughout their studies, students are encouraged to think critically about photography’s role in society and its power to influence perception and change. The program fosters visual literacy, teaching students to read, interpret, and construct images with intention. Assignments and projects often engage with contemporary themes—environmental awareness, social justice, and cultural identity—making photography not only an art form but also a tool for reflection and advocacy.
Hands-on experience is central to the program’s philosophy. Students work in digital labs and studios equipped with the latest imaging technology, while also exploring the creative possibilities of analog and experimental processes. Faculty mentors guide them through personal projects, critiques, and exhibitions that build confidence and a professional portfolio.
By the time they graduate, students from the University of Nevada, Reno’s Photography and Videography program emerge as thoughtful image-makers—artists and storytellers capable of translating vision into impact in a rapidly evolving visual world.
