Auburn University’s College of Liberal Arts offers a dynamic photography program that blends technical mastery with creative exploration. Rooted in the philosophy of “technique and vision,” the photography area trains students to become professional contemporary practicing artists who can work across both analog and digital processes. Studio courses emphasize not only the practical use of equipment and technologies but also the development of a personal visual language that speaks to the student’s unique artistic vision.

At Auburn, photography is approached as more than image-making; it is a discipline of intellectual inquiry and artistic growth. Students are encouraged to investigate their personal interests through lens-based media with both sensitivity and intelligence. The curriculum fosters critical thinking by combining practice with research, writing, and critiques that situate their work within historical and contemporary discourse. This rigorous combination allows students to discover the expressive and conceptual potential of photography while building a foundation that prepares them for careers in the arts or related fields.

For those pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in photography, Auburn provides a structured sequence of four core photography courses, culminating in a capstone senior project. This final stage challenges students to present a mature artistic voice, with opportunities to expand into video, installation, or interdisciplinary projects. The program ensures that graduates leave with a portfolio that demonstrates both technical skill and conceptual depth.

The facilities reflect Auburn’s commitment to providing students with a professional learning environment. Resources include a fully equipped black-and-white darkroom, a north light studio, a digital lab with large-format inkjet printers and scanners, and access to medium and large-format cameras. These tools allow students to explore a wide range of photographic techniques.

In addition to the BFA track, Auburn offers a Minor in Photography open to students outside studio art and art history. This program introduces both analog and digital practices, giving students a strong foundation in photography as a fine art discipline and enriching their broader academic and creative pursuits.
