Grossmont College Photography Program

The Grossmont College Photography Program stands out as an immersive and comprehensive course of study that goes far beyond teaching craft and aesthetics. It recognizes the central role photography plays in culture, communication, and personal expression, and encourages students to engage with the medium both critically and creatively. Their experience, which spans from gallery and museum exhibitions to industry-based assignments, brings invaluable real-world insight to the classroom. This ensures that instruction is both conceptually rich and rooted in current photographic practices.

Grossmont’s state-of-the-art facilities offer students hands-on access to an impressive 5,000 square feet of studio space. These resources include two Apple iMac digital labs with Epson inkjet printers, a 19-station darkroom for 35mm to 4x5 film processing, and a professional 1,000 square foot studio outfitted with a Profoto track lighting system. The program also supports experimentation with historical and alternative photographic processes, fostering an environment where innovation and tradition meet.

Students can pursue an AA in Studio Art – Photography or a Certificate of Achievement – Photography, each providing rigorous training in both theory and practice. Coursework progresses from foundational to advanced levels, covering analog and digital photography, studio practices, and experimental approaches. The curriculum combines technical mastery with critical discourse, helping students develop a personal vision while situating their work within broader historical and contemporary contexts.

Graduates emerge with the ability to analyze, create, and communicate effectively through images, preparing them for transfer to four-year institutions, professional careers in photography, or personal artistic growth.
