The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is a leading cultural institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art, located in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted solely to 20th-century art. Today, it continues to serve as a dynamic platform for innovative visual expression, offering a rich and diverse program that reflects the evolving narratives of modern art.

With more than 170,000 square feet of gallery space, SFMOMA is one of the largest modern and contemporary art museums in the United States. A major architectural expansion completed in 2016, designed by the international firm Snøhetta, nearly tripled the museum’s gallery space and introduced a striking new facade that reflects the city’s natural light and urban texture.

The museum's extensive collection includes over 33,000 artworks, encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design, and media arts. Highlights range from iconic works by Jackson Pollock, Frida Kahlo, and Andy Warhol to contemporary pieces by artists such as Julie Mehretu, Kerry James Marshall, and Olafur Eliasson. SFMOMA is also known for its outstanding photography holdings, which include the entire archive of California photographer Dorothea Lange.

SFMOMA is deeply committed to public engagement and education. It offers a variety of programs designed to connect people of all ages and backgrounds with art, from artist talks and film screenings to school visits and hands-on workshops. The museum’s commitment to accessibility and innovation is also reflected in its digital initiatives and community collaborations.

As a hub for creativity and discovery, SFMOMA fosters meaningful encounters with art and ideas, making it an essential destination for both residents and visitors seeking to explore the transformative power of visual culture in today’s world.
