The Milwaukee Art Museum, widely recognized as one of the Midwest’s most significant cultural institutions, has grown from modest beginnings into a world-class destination for art and architecture. Its origins trace back to 1888, when Frederick Layton built an art gallery near Cathedral Square. That same year, the Milwaukee Art Association—later the Milwaukee Art Institute—was founded by a group of civic leaders dedicated to making art accessible to the public. These early efforts laid the groundwork for what would become a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life.

In 1957, the Layton Art Gallery and the Milwaukee Art Institute united under one roof in the Eero Saarinen–designed War Memorial Center. This striking lakeside building not only showcased an expanding collection but also served as a tribute to those who had served in the armed forces. Growth continued in 1975, when architect David Kahler designed an addition to create much-needed gallery space.

Perhaps the most iconic transformation came in 2001 with the opening of the Quadracci Pavilion, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Santiago Calatrava. With its soaring, wing-like brise soleil, the structure instantly became a symbol of Milwaukee, capturing worldwide attention and firmly establishing the museum as an architectural landmark.

Today, the Milwaukee Art Museum houses more than 30,000 works spanning centuries and cultures, from European old masters and American decorative arts to modern and contemporary pieces. The museum welcomes nearly 400,000 visitors annually and maintains a robust membership base, reflecting its central role in the community. Beyond exhibitions, its art education program is particularly noteworthy, reaching more than 50,000 young people each year through tours, workshops, and internships.

Blending history, innovation, and civic pride, the Milwaukee Art Museum stands as both a guardian of artistic heritage and a beacon for future generations.

All About Photo Presents ’Alpine Hiatus’ by Filippo Poli
In Alpine Hiatus: The Snow No Longer Tastes Like Snow, Italian photographer and architect Filippo Poli turns his camera toward a landscape caught between memory and mutation. The project unfolds as both personal archaeology and ecological reflection — an inquiry into what remains when the snow, once a symbol of purity and permanence, becomes an artifact of artifice. Winner of the April 2026 All About Photo Solo Exhibition contest, Poli’s work traces the dissonance between remembrance and reality, offering a haunting meditation on disappearance.
