Art + Practice (A+P) has established a distinctive model that combines contemporary art with meaningful social engagement. Located in the historic Leimert Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles, the nonprofit foundation operates at the intersection of culture, education, and community support. Since its founding, A+P has sought to demonstrate how art institutions can play an active role in addressing social challenges while remaining committed to presenting ambitious contemporary exhibitions. Through partnerships with leading nonprofit organizations and cultural institutions, the foundation has created a space where artistic excellence and public service reinforce one another.

Photography plays an important role within A+P's exhibition program, which is organized in collaboration with the California African American Museum. The institution regularly presents museum-quality exhibitions featuring photographers whose work explores identity, history, social justice, migration, memory, and the lived experiences of diverse communities. Documentary photography, conceptual image-making, portraiture, and archival projects frequently appear alongside video, installation, sculpture, and other contemporary media, encouraging visitors to consider photography as both an artistic language and a powerful tool for cultural reflection. Rather than maintaining a permanent photography collection, A+P focuses on presenting thoughtfully curated exhibitions that bring internationally recognized artists together with important emerging voices.

Occupying a campus of nearly 20,000 square feet, Art + Practice offers free admission to all of its exhibitions and public programs, ensuring that contemporary art remains accessible to a broad audience. Artist talks, panel discussions, film screenings, lectures, and educational workshops accompany each exhibition, creating opportunities for deeper engagement with the ideas explored through photography and other visual practices. These programs encourage dialogue between artists, scholars, students, and members of the local community while expanding the educational impact of every exhibition.

What distinguishes Art + Practice is the integration of its cultural mission with direct community support. While visitors encounter compelling exhibitions of contemporary photography and visual art, the organization simultaneously collaborates with First Place for Youth and Nest Global to support transition-age foster youth and children experiencing displacement. This unique combination of artistic programming and social responsibility has made A+P an influential cultural institution where photography serves not only as a creative medium but also as a catalyst for conversation, empathy, and lasting community engagement.
