The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City stands as both a cultural treasure and a testament to the vision of its unlikely founders. William Rockhill Nelson, a newspaper publisher and real estate developer, believed that art was essential to the life of a civilized city. His estate, through the William Rockhill Nelson Trust, was designated to acquire works of art for the benefit of the public. Mary McAfee Atkins, a retired teacher who traveled widely in Europe, shared that conviction and left a portion of her estate to secure land for a museum. Though they never met, their combined legacies gave rise to an institution that has shaped Kansas City’s cultural landscape for nearly a century.

The museum opened its doors in December 1933, during the depths of the Great Depression, and immediately drew crowds eager to experience its world-class collections. Originally divided between the Atkins Museum of Fine Arts and the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, the institution unified under its current name in 1982. Today, the Nelson-Atkins is home to more than 42,000 works spanning five millennia, from ancient artifacts to cutting-edge contemporary art.

Equally notable is the museum’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Since 1998, admission has been free, reaffirming the founders’ belief that art belongs to everyone. The museum actively engages with the community through partnerships, educational programs, and initiatives that amplify diverse voices. Its expansive campus now includes the original Beaux-Arts style Nelson-Atkins Building, the modern Bloch Building completed in 2007, and the beloved Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park, which invites visitors to experience art in an open, natural setting.
