Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
New York - 381 Lafayette Street - NY 10003
The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation carries forward the pioneering vision of its namesake, one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century. Established to honor Rauschenberg’s enduring commitment to experimentation, collaboration, and social change, the Foundation supports a wide range of programs that reflect his belief in the transformative power of art. Guided by his principle of working “in the gap between art and life,” the Foundation cultivates dialogue among disciplines and fosters initiatives that extend the boundaries of creative practice.

Photography holds a particularly vital place in the Foundation’s stewardship of Rauschenberg’s legacy. Throughout his career, Rauschenberg engaged photography not just as a documentary tool, but as an essential medium for experimentation. He often employed the camera in tandem with printmaking, painting, and assemblage, creating hybrid works that blurred distinctions between art forms. His use of photographic imagery, from silkscreens to photo transfers, reflected his fascination with the immediacy of everyday life and the possibilities of reproduction in an age of mass media. The Foundation maintains and promotes this body of work, highlighting how central photography was to Rauschenberg’s exploration of perception, memory, and cultural commentary.

Beyond conserving his own practice, the Foundation also encourages contemporary artists to approach photography in similarly innovative ways. Through its residency programs and grants, it provides support for photographers and interdisciplinary creators who continue the spirit of experimentation that Rauschenberg embodied. In doing so, the Foundation not only preserves the past but actively shapes the present and future of photographic practice.

By maintaining his archives, organizing exhibitions, and lending works to institutions worldwide, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation ensures that photography remains an integral thread in the story of his art. At the same time, it extends his vision outward, using photography as a bridge between artistic innovation and broader cultural transformation.

Alia Ali
Gilman Contemporary presents a striking introduction to the work of Alia Ali, an artist whose multicultural background spanning Yemen, Bosnia, and the United States deeply informs her visual language. Her photographs, rich in pattern and color, navigate the complex terrain of identity, migration, and belonging. Rather than offering conventional portraiture, Ali envelops her subjects in boldly patterned textiles, allowing fabric itself to become both veil and voice. These coverings obscure familiar markers of identity, inviting viewers to question how much of what we think we know about a person is shaped by what we see—or what we assume.
