The Bridgeport Art Center is a thriving creative hub nestled in the heart of Chicago’s historic Bridgeport neighborhood. Since its founding in 2001, it has transformed the former Spiegel Catalog Warehouse into a vibrant, multi-disciplinary space for artists, designers, and makers across all fields. Encompassing over 500,000 square feet, the building’s architectural beauty—featuring exposed brick, timber beams, and soaring windows with sweeping city views—sets the stage for an environment where innovation and artistry flourish.
Built in 1911 and originally designed by architect A.S. Alschuler, the structure began its life as the headquarters for Albert Pick & Co., later serving as a warehouse for Spiegel Catalog and then Goodwill Industries. After decades of industrial use, it was reborn as the Bridgeport Art Center when it was acquired by developers Paul Levy and Tony Augustine of Prairie Management & Development.
Today, the center is home to over 120 working artists and hosts a range of creative enterprises. It features three curated gallery spaces, including Gallery Row and the Sculpture Garden Gallery, which showcase rotating exhibitions throughout the year. The Fashion Design Center and the Chicago Ceramic Center add further depth to its creative offerings, fostering artistic growth across disciplines.
Beyond studios and galleries, the Bridgeport Art Center is also a premier destination for events. The Skyline Loft, an expansive 18,000 square-foot venue, offers panoramic views of the Chicago skyline, while the 16,000 square-foot Sculpture Garden merges art and nature in a striking indoor-outdoor setting. Sculptural works from the Chicago Sculptural Exhibition and BAC’s own collection bring dynamic visual interest to the grounds.
With its fusion of history, architecture, and contemporary artistry, the Bridgeport Art Center stands as a testament to the transformative power of creative reuse and the city’s enduring artistic spirit.
