FotoFest is a pioneering contemporary arts organization based in Houston, Texas, known for its global perspective and unwavering commitment to photography and visual culture. Co-founded in 1983 by photojournalists Frederick Baldwin and Wendy Watriss alongside European gallery director Petra Benteler, FotoFest has since evolved into a vital platform for visual storytelling, artistic innovation, and cultural dialogue.
At the heart of FotoFest’s mission is the exploration of social, political, and cultural narratives through photography and related media. The organization presents year-round exhibitions, publications, and public programming that challenge perspectives and amplify diverse voices. Every two years, FotoFest hosts its internationally recognized Biennial—a citywide celebration of photography that features expansive exhibitions, symposiums, performances, film screenings, and one of the largest portfolio review programs in the world for photographic artists.
FotoFest also places strong emphasis on education and community engagement. Its Literacy Through Photography program, established in collaboration with photographer Wendy Ewald, brings photography-based learning to K–12 classrooms across Houston, helping students develop creative and communication skills through visual storytelling. Thousands of students benefit from these projects each year, bridging the gap between art and education.
Throughout its history, FotoFest has expanded its reach through international exchange programs, traveling exhibitions, and publications that further its mission of connecting global communities through the arts. Since relocating to Silver Street Studios in 2014, FotoFest has continued to serve as a cultural anchor in Houston’s Arts District, fostering discovery and artistic growth.
With an inclusive approach and a deep respect for underrepresented voices, FotoFest remains a leading force in contemporary photography, offering a forum where images speak to both local and international audiences, sparking conversation and inspiring change.
