Shoshana Wayne Gallery has been a pioneering force in the Los Angeles art world since its founding in 1986. Originally located in a storied Santa Monica building once home to the Beach Boys' recording studio, the gallery quickly carved out a distinct voice with a bold mission: to elevate women artists and provide them a platform to thrive. From its earliest years, the gallery demonstrated a keen eye for emerging talent, showcasing artists who would go on to become prominent voices in contemporary art, including Nicole Eisenman, Kiki Smith, Yoko Ono, Nan Goldin, and Lorna Simpson.
Over the decades, Shoshana Wayne Gallery has earned a reputation for its intellectually rigorous and aesthetically diverse exhibitions. Landmark shows have included “Lost and Found in California: Four Decades of Assemblage Art,” “West Coast Duchamp,” and “Young British Artists,” which introduced local audiences to major UK artists like Chris Ofili and Sarah Lucas. The gallery has continually balanced historical perspective with contemporary urgency, as seen in performances by Rachel Lachowicz and woodcut retrospectives of Anselm Kiefer.
In recent years, the gallery’s programming has expanded to include ambitious international installations such as Michal Rovner’s “Nofim” and Zadok Ben-David’s “People I Saw But Never Met,” which garnered international acclaim. These exhibitions reflect the gallery’s ongoing commitment to socially relevant, visually powerful, and often immersive artistic experiences.
In 2022, the gallery embarked on a new chapter by relocating to a larger, 5,000-square-foot space in the culturally vibrant West Adams district. The move has allowed for even more expansive presentations, inaugurated with Orly Maiberg’s thought-provoking exhibition “Where do we go from here.”
Through nearly four decades of fearless curating and steadfast advocacy, Shoshana Wayne Gallery remains a cornerstone of contemporary art in Los Angeles, fostering dialogue, discovery, and enduring impact.
