PhotoMidwest is a vibrant nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of photography across Madison, southern Wisconsin, and the broader Midwest. Established in 1998 as the Center for Photography at Madison, the organization was renamed in 2014 to reflect its growing regional influence. Entirely volunteer-run, PhotoMidwest offers a wide array of educational opportunities, including formal classes, hands-on workshops, inspiring lectures, and engaging exhibitions that foster a deep appreciation and understanding of the photographic arts.
The organization thrives on community involvement, hosting regular member meetings that focus on a variety of photographic interests. These monthly gatherings allow photographers to explore specific areas such as landscape, black and white, nature, long exposure, travel, alternography, and women’s interests. Newcomers are warmly welcomed to attend once as guests before deciding to join.
PhotoMidwest’s commitment to education is evident in its diverse programming. Classes, taught by experienced instructors, are available to both members and non-members and encourage growth through assignments, critiques, and collaborative learning. These courses, whether weekly or intensive weekend sessions, create a supportive atmosphere where photographers at all skill levels can thrive.
One of PhotoMidwest’s signature events is the PhotoMidwest Festival, held every two years. This festival unites photographers from across the Midwest, offering a juried exhibition, workshops, and lectures that celebrate the rich variety of contemporary photography. Additional exhibitions, such as the Annual Members Exhibition at UW-Madison Hospital, and opportunities for individual and group shows at the PhotoMidwest Gallery, offer continuous engagement with the community.
Through its year-round activities, including free public lectures every third Thursday of the month, PhotoMidwest fosters a dynamic, inclusive environment where photographers can share ideas, develop skills, and celebrate their passion for the photographic arts.
