HCP - Houston Center for Photography

The Houston Center for Photography is a dynamic institution devoted to the advancement and appreciation of photography as a vital form of contemporary art. Established in 1981 as a grassroots cooperative of visual artists, it has since evolved into a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that nurtures a vibrant photographic culture in Houston and beyond.

Located in the heart of Houston’s Museum District, the Center offers free access to its exhibitions, which showcase a compelling array of contemporary photography from both emerging talents and established artists. Education lies at the core of the Center’s mission. With over 300 classes and workshops offered annually, the Learning Center serves as a hub for photographers of all levels. From beginners exploring their first camera to professionals refining their craft, students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities including a digital darkroom, professional lighting studio, and a dedicated critique room. The Learning Center also houses the John Cleary Library, the region’s only publicly accessible library devoted entirely to photography, with a vast collection of over 4,000 titles.
