David Peter Francis
New York - 35 East Broadway #3F - NY 10002
David Peter Francis is one of New York's newest contemporary art galleries, opening its doors in 2024 with a program rooted in thoughtful curation, close collaboration with artists, and a commitment to presenting voices that deserve broader recognition. Founded by David Pagliarulo after his tenure as Director of Marinaro Gallery, the space occupies the third floor of a historic building on East Broadway in Chinatown. Defined by soaring ceilings, generous natural light, and the atmosphere of a classic downtown loft, the gallery provides an intimate setting where carefully considered exhibitions encourage visitors to engage deeply with contemporary artistic practice. Rather than pursuing a single aesthetic direction, David Peter Francis emphasizes meaningful dialogue between artworks, allowing each exhibition to unfold through visual and conceptual relationships.

Photography already occupies a notable place within the gallery's curatorial vision. The inaugural exhibition, Butterflies, brought together artists working across multiple media while including significant photographic works, most notably an evocative portrait by renowned American photographer Peter Hujar. Its inclusion reflected the gallery's broader interest in photography as both an independent artistic discipline and a medium capable of enriching conversations with painting, sculpture, and installation. By juxtaposing photographic images with works in other media, David Peter Francis highlights photography's enduring ability to explore memory, identity, intimacy, and perception within contemporary art. This interdisciplinary approach allows historical photographic works to resonate alongside emerging artistic practices, creating unexpected connections across generations.

The gallery's exhibitions are shaped by extensive conversations with artists rather than market trends alone. Pagliarulo has expressed a desire to champion overlooked talents whose work has not always received the institutional or commercial attention it merits. This research-driven approach encourages exhibitions that privilege thoughtful storytelling and intellectual exchange over spectacle. The carefully designed floor plan, enhanced by subtle architectural interventions, creates multiple sightlines that invite visitors to discover visual relationships between artworks. Photography benefits particularly from this presentation strategy, as images interact naturally with neighboring sculptures, paintings, and mixed-media installations within the luminous exhibition space.

Although still in its earliest chapter, David Peter Francis has quickly established itself as an ambitious addition to New York's vibrant gallery community. Located within Chinatown's flourishing contemporary art district, it contributes to a neighborhood known for experimental programming and close-knit creative networks. Through carefully curated exhibitions, an openness to cross-disciplinary practices, and an appreciation for photography's distinctive expressive possibilities, the gallery demonstrates a commitment to building meaningful relationships between artists, collectors, curators, and audiences. As its program continues to evolve, David Peter Francis is positioning itself as a thoughtful platform where photography and contemporary art intersect through curiosity, collaboration, and fresh critical perspectives.
