Miami - 45 NE 39th St - FL 33137
The Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection (JCMC) was established in 2005 with a clear mission: to deepen the study and appreciation of Geometric Abstraction — viewed as a universal artistic language that transcends borders and cultural differences. Over time, the collection has blossomed into a wide-ranging archive of modern and contemporary art, enriched by public programming, institutional loans, scholarly publications, and exhibitions.

Originally focused on Latin American modernist abstraction from the mid-20th century, JCMC has broadened its scope over the years to include artists from Europe, North America, and other corners of the world — making its holdings truly global. The collection also expanded in 2018 with the acquisition of a significant set of artifacts from the Ye’kwana people, compiled by anthropologist Charles Brewer-Carías. These objects bring an important cultural and anthropological dimension to the collection, creating a dialogue between modern abstraction and indigenous artistic traditions.

JCMC’s physical presence in Miami’s Design District (open since 2016) allows the public to engage directly with this rich collection. Its inaugural exhibition, “The Unbounded Line,” presented over fifty works and set the tone for the collection’s commitment to both historical scholarship and contemporary relevance. Since then, JCMC has continued to host exhibitions, scholarly events, and collaborations, all aimed at exploring abstraction’s enduring power and adaptability.

While geometric abstraction remains at its core, JCMC has also shown openness to including photography and other image-based works in recent years. Notably, the 2025 exhibition “Urban Forms” explores formal, technical, and theoretical links between newly acquired photographs and the established abstract/geometric works of the collection. This signals a broader understanding of abstraction: one that transcends painting, sculpture, or drawing, and embraces photography as a valid and powerful medium in the language of abstract form and visual structure.

Through its expansive collection, its educational and publishing programs, and its recent inclusion of photography, JCMC embodies a vision of art as a global, evolving conversation. It offers audiences a chance to explore how abstraction and form continue to resonate across cultures, media, and time — offering a space where geometry, history, and contemporary image-making intersect.
