The Chicago Artists Coalition, known as CAC, has been a vital force in supporting emerging artists and curators since its founding in 1974. Established by a small but determined group of artists, the organization sought to advocate for artists' rights, visibility, and economic support within Chicago’s cultural landscape. Over the years, CAC played a crucial role in shaping arts policy in the city, contributing to initiatives such as the Percent for Art Ordinance and Chicago Artists Month.
Today, CAC continues its mission by providing innovative residency programs, professional development opportunities, and exhibition platforms that help launch the careers of emerging creatives. The organization was a pioneer in introducing curatorial residencies through its HATCH program and offering guaranteed solo exhibitions for artists in its BOLT residency. By eliminating artist fees from its residency programs, CAC ensures greater accessibility and equity within the art community.
CAC’s impact extends far beyond its physical space. Alumni have gone on to exhibit at major institutions such as MoMA, The Whitney, LACMA, and the MCA Chicago. Many have secured curatorial and teaching positions at prestigious organizations, including The Renaissance Society, Gallery 400, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 2018, CAC moved to a new, fully accessible facility in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity and artistic innovation. The space serves as a hub for exhibitions, educational programming, and community engagement, fostering critical discourse and collaboration among artists, curators, and collectors.
By continuously evolving to meet the needs of the creative community, CAC remains a cornerstone of Chicago’s contemporary art scene. Through its residencies, exhibitions, and advocacy efforts, the organization nurtures artistic excellence and helps shape the future of art in Chicago and beyond.
