CMCA - Center for Maine Contemporary Art

The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) has been at the forefront of Maine’s vibrant arts scene since its founding in 1952. What began as a grassroots effort to give voice to contemporary artists working in Maine has blossomed into the state’s leading institution for modern visual arts. Originally formed as Maine Coast Artists, the center was born from a collaborative energy that brought together creators and community members in unconventional spaces—barns, lofts, and public buildings—to showcase fresh, boundary-pushing work.

Early exhibitions reflected a spirit of experimentation and possibility, welcoming both emerging artists and those who would go on to gain national acclaim, including Alex Katz, Louise Nevelson, and Fairfield Porter. Without a permanent home for its first fifteen years, the center was held together by passion and vision. That changed in 1967 when it acquired a former firehouse in Rockport, thanks to the efforts of its new director, who also co-founded the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

For decades, the Rockport space served as a hub for exhibitions and artistic dialogue. As the organization evolved, it was renamed the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, reflecting a growing scope and ambition. With the opening of its purpose-built facility in downtown Rockland, CMCA reached a new level of accessibility and visibility. Designed by architect Toshiko Mori, the striking building welcomes tens of thousands of visitors annually and features gallery spaces filled with natural light and a courtyard that connects CMCA directly to the community.

Through dynamic exhibitions, educational programs, and community outreach, CMCA continues to champion artists with connections to Maine. From emerging voices to established names, it remains a platform for creative innovation and a vital force in the evolving story of contemporary art in the region.
