Schneider Gallery

For over 30 years, Schneider Gallery stood as a cornerstone of Chicago’s photographic arts scene. Nestled in the city’s River North district, the gallery built a lasting legacy as one of the premier spaces dedicated to contemporary photography, with a particular emphasis on artists from Latin America. Founded and directed by Martha Schneider, the gallery became known for its curatorial depth, global perspective, and passionate advocacy for photographers pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling.

Throughout its history, Schneider Gallery presented more than 150 thoughtfully curated exhibitions, introducing Chicago audiences to a diverse and powerful array of international voices. Among the artists featured were Luis González Palma, whose portraits explore identity and memory; Cecilia Paredes, known for her immersive self-portraits that blend into intricate backdrops; and Lalla Essaydi, whose work interrogates Orientalist traditions and reclaims narratives of Arab womanhood. While the physical exhibition space has now closed, the spirit of Schneider Gallery continues under Martha Schneider’s guidance as a private art consultant.
