Van Doren Waxter Gallery is distinguished by its thoughtful blend of postwar and contemporary art, presenting a cross-generational program that connects the influential voices of the 20th century with those shaping the artistic landscape today. Established with a vision to bridge historical legacies with contemporary innovation, the gallery represents a carefully curated roster of living artists alongside the foundations and estates of significant post-World War II figures.

At the heart of the gallery’s mission is a commitment to contextualizing new work within a broader historical framework. The gallery represents numerous important estates and foundations, including those of James Brooks, Louise Fishman, Richard Diebenkorn, Hedda Sterne, and Jack Tworkov, among others. These artists played defining roles in the evolution of American modernism and abstraction, and their legacies continue to inform the gallery’s programming and exhibitions.

Van Doren Waxter also supports a select group of contemporary artists such as Marsha Cottrell, Brian Rochefort, and Gareth Nyandoro, whose practices reflect a diversity of approaches and materials. These artists are presented not in isolation, but in conversation with historical figures, allowing for a rich dialogue across time periods and creative disciplines.

The gallery’s expertise extends to the secondary market, with a focus on significant works by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Roy Lichtenstein, Cy Twombly, and Georgia O’Keeffe. This dual focus enables Van Doren Waxter to offer a comprehensive view of modern and contemporary art, bridging past and present with intellectual rigor and aesthetic sensitivity.

Through exhibitions, scholarly research, and close collaborations with foundations and collectors, Van Doren Waxter has established itself as a vital platform for understanding the evolution of modern art and its continuing influence on the artists of today.
