Anton Kern Gallery

Anton Kern Gallery has long been a vibrant presence in the New York art world, known for its eclectic program and commitment to showcasing contemporary artists across a range of disciplines and styles. In April 2017, the gallery relocated to its current home at 16 East 55th Street, a stately six-story townhouse redesigned by studioMDA to suit the needs of a modern exhibition space while honoring the building’s historic character. The venue includes three floors dedicated to exhibitions, complemented by permanent design elements created by Martino Gamper and Jim Lambie that merge art with architecture.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the building has a colorful past—it once housed one of New York’s earliest boutique hair salons, rumored to have catered to the Roosevelt family. For decades, it was home to an antiques dealer before becoming the elegant and versatile space Anton Kern Gallery occupies today, situated in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, a location rich with both artistic heritage and urban energy.

In January 2020, the gallery expanded its footprint with the launch of WINDOW, a pair of street-facing vitrines at 91 Walker Street in Tribeca. This innovative project offers a unique way to engage with contemporary art outside the traditional gallery format. Always visible, open around the clock, WINDOW has featured a range of intimate yet highly visible installations by artists such as David Shrigley, Chris Martin, and Olaf Breuning, blurring the lines between public art and exhibition.

Anton Kern Gallery continues to serve as a space where bold ideas come to life, welcoming both seasoned collectors and curious newcomers. With a spirit that embraces experimentation and an eye toward the unexpected, the gallery remains a dynamic platform for contemporary artistic expression in New York City.
