The Brick Gallery is a nonprofit visual art space dedicated to fostering critical engagement with contemporary culture through innovative exhibitions, public programs, and publications. Rooted in the belief that art is a vital tool for understanding the complexities of our world, The Brick serves as a space for experimentation, dialogue, and discovery. Rather than offering clear-cut answers, the gallery champions art that poses challenging questions and sparks thoughtful conversation.
Originally founded as LAXART in 2005 by curator Lauri Firstenberg, the organization quickly became a vital part of the Los Angeles art landscape, providing a platform for emerging and under-recognized voices. Since its inception, The Brick has produced over 400 projects, including newly commissioned works, solo exhibitions, and site-specific installations. In 2015, the gallery relocated to a historic 1928 recording studio, significantly expanding its capacity and reach.
The Brick is known for its collaborative spirit, having partnered with prominent institutions like the Getty, Hammer Museum, Frieze, and Art Basel, as well as with local cultural organizations and educational initiatives. These collaborations have allowed the gallery to amplify its mission and create programs that are both socially relevant and historically grounded.
Under the leadership of Hamza Walker, who joined as director in 2016, The Brick has expanded its scope to include thematic group shows, projects with historical resonance, and large-scale exhibitions that bring together diverse artistic practices. Walker’s curatorial vision continues to shape the gallery’s role as a thought leader in contemporary art.
Open to the public and always free of charge, The Brick prioritizes accessibility and inclusion. Its programs aim to connect a broad audience with the evolving landscape of contemporary art, encouraging critical reflection and fostering a deeper understanding of the cultural currents shaping our time.
