Between Rubble, Dust, and Balloons is a long-term documentary project about women in Antakya three years after the devastating earthquake of February 6, 2023. While global attention has faded, the consequences of the disaster continue to shape everyday life. The project follows three women of different ages and social backgrounds as they rebuild their homes, livelihoods, and sense of stability.
Through environmental portraits, intimate observations, and scenes of daily routine, the series examines the visible and invisible layers of recovery. Destroyed neighborhoods, provisional shelters, and dust-filled streets form the physical backdrop, while psychological strain, shifting gender roles, and quiet solidarity reveal the deeper transformation of the community. Recurring visual elements—muted tones, dust, and the unexpected presence of colorful balloons—symbolize the tension between fragility and hope.
By returning to the protagonists over time, the project seeks to document not only loss, but endurance and agency. It explores how women carry responsibility for family and community in times of crisis and how reconstruction is not only architectural, but emotional and social.
The series aims to raise awareness of the long-term impact of disasters beyond the moment of catastrophe and to restore visibility to those whose stories continue long after the headlines disappear.
