Produced between 2016 and 2025, Venezuelan Youth is
Silvana Trevale’s paean to her homeland - a testament that distances itself from the frequently negative portrayals of a country in crisis to offer up a sensitive and profound view of the complexities of Venezuelan identity as seen through the eyes of its youth. Released as a hardback monograph from independent London publishers Guest Editions, Venezuelan Youth will launch on 7 May 2026 and be displayed at Guest Editions’ East London project space from 7 - 30 May 2026.
The question at the forefront of this body of work for Trevale was how to document a place dismissed by many as a ruin despite it clearly teeming with life. Her eventual answer was to capture the children and adolescents who live there and the sense of incredible lightness they project even during undeniably difficult circumstances.
Returning to Venezuela from London annually since 2017, Trevale has been intent on exploring the lives of its youth and their daily struggles. Travelling outside of the capital of Caracas, she spent extended time with her subjects and their families to build up closer relationships and gain a more intimate insight into their lives. Venezuelan Youth was inspired by both a faint sense of nostalgia for the Venezuela that her parents once lived in contrasted with her own very different experience and that of today’s youth and therefore Trevale’s resultant frustration and anger towards the impact of the country’s current troubles.
Photographing her young subjects, Trevale found herself intrigued and fascinated by their constant shifting - from a state of playful naivety that then hardens into a more rigid, stoic attitude toward their lived realities. Not only are they confronting the extreme food and medicine shortages that have caused the death of many around them, but also the lack of opportunities, leaving little room for hope except for the possibility of leaving the country. As she explains of Venezuelan Youth,
“With the images, I intended to create an abstract calming state I imagine the young feel between their innocence and a seemingly inevitable premature maturation.”
Thomas Coombes, founder and creative director of Guest Editions, says of Venezuelan Youth,
“After many years in the making, and having long admired the work of Silvana Trevale, we are excited to be releasing such a poignant body of work. We have worked in close partnership with Caracas-based designer Ricardo Báez, and the result is a true and meaningful representation of Venezuelan life, filled with so much love and soul.”
For Trevale, Venezuelan Youth permits her to transform the trauma of having left her country into a tribute to the strength of those who still remain. In so doing, she has created a body of work that reflects the Venezuela that truly exists:
“the one I love deeply, a wounded and fearful country, but one that still breathes hope.”
