Stories Untold by Calla Fleischer
Spanning more than a decade of journeys and visual discoveries, Stories Untold is the ambitious new publication by internationally acclaimed photographer Calla Fleischer, a traveler whose lens is guided as much by curiosity as by empathy. Expansive in both scale and spirit, the nearly 400-page volume gathers a rich tapestry of images that explore the subtleties of the human experience—from fleeting gestures in crowded streets to quiet, contemplative portraits that linger long after the page is turned.

Produced with exceptional attention to detail, the book is conceived not merely as a catalog of photographs but as a tactile object meant to be revisited and rediscovered over time. Each spread invites the viewer to slow down, to notice textures, expressions, and atmospheres that might otherwise pass unseen. The sequencing reveals Fleischer’s instinct for storytelling, weaving visual connections across continents and cultures while maintaining an intimate, observational tone.

Her travels for this project trace an arc across Cuba, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Morocco, Myanmar, Portugal, South Africa, Turkey, and the United States, where she is now based in New Hampshire. Across these locations, she moves fluidly between color and black-and-white imagery, selecting whichever visual language best conveys the emotional resonance of a scene. The result is a collection that feels both cohesive and globally expansive.

Fleischer’s photographic path began at age twelve, when she received her first camera and started documenting daily life around her. What began as casual observations of friends, relatives, and passersby gradually evolved into a lifelong commitment to recording cultural nuance and human connection. This early sensitivity to environment and gesture remains central to her practice, visible in images made in places such as Kolkata and Darjeeling, where layered histories and contemporary realities intersect within a single frame.

Ultimately, Stories Untold stands as both a visual archive and a poetic reflection on shared humanity. Through patience, attentiveness, and a deep respect for her subjects, Fleischer reveals that even the most ordinary moment can hold extraordinary meaning when seen with care.
