The project When The Pavement Breathes by
Margarita Mavromichalis, on view throughout February 2026, is a vivid exploration of those fleeting, often overlooked moments that quietly transform the mundane into the extraordinary. Through spontaneous and candid encounters, Mavromichalis reveals a street world alive with subtle disruptions—unexpected juxtapositions, fleeting expressions, visual coincidences, and delicate details that momentarily suspend routine perception.
Rooted in an intuitive and observant approach to street photography, this series invites viewers to slow down and rediscover wonder in the familiar. Humor, irony, beauty, and occasional oddity emerge organically, turning everyday sidewalks into a gallery of the unexpected. The street is not merely a backdrop for daily life, but a living, breathing stage where chance encounters unfold and the ordinary continuously flirts with surprise.

At the heart of
When The Pavement Breathes is a heightened attention to the quiet poetry of the everyday. A gesture, a shadow, or an improbable alignment becomes a small revelation, gently disrupting habits of seeing. Rather than imposing meaning, the photographs leave space for interpretation, allowing viewers to project their own experiences onto these fragments of daily life. The series ultimately invites us to remain alert, curious, and receptive to the subtle magic that unfolds just beneath the surface of routine.
Margarita Mavromichalis approaches photography as a universal language—shaped by her background in translation and interpreting. After studying at the International Center of Photography in New York, she returned to Greece, where she continues to work, focusing on street photography and socially engaged projects. She also shares her practice through street photography workshops worldwide.
