For more than thirty years,
Photoworks has been at the heart of photography culture in the UK and beyond, nurturing artists, commissioning new work, and creating opportunities for people to engage deeply with the medium. Founded in 1995 from the Cross Channel Photographic Mission, Photoworks has grown into a nationally and internationally recognised charity that supports photographers and visual thinkers at every stage of their careers.
Now, to mark this remarkable milestone, Photoworks presents Photoworks Annual 32: 30 Years of Photoworks — a beautifully produced celebration of the organisation’s history, vision, and impact. Edited by
Diane SmythX and designed by Jane & Jeremy, this Annual reflects on three decades of creative exploration, critical engagement, and community building through photography.
The publication brings together a rich selection of portfolios by photographers from Photoworks’ past and present, including internationally recognised artists such as Rinko Kawauchi, Neeta Madahar, Anna Fox, and Theo Simpson, alongside exciting emerging voices like Myah Asha Jeffers and Henna Nadeem. Each portfolio offers a unique perspective on contemporary photography, making the Annual as inspiring as it is diverse.

In addition to artist portfolios, the book features insightful writings from leading figures in the photography world — including Olivia Arthur, Susan Meiselas, and Nick Waplington — who share their reflections on the medium and its evolving role in society. There’s also an in-depth history of Photoworks, featuring interviews with past directors, editors, and curators who helped shape the organisation’s distinctive voice.
One of the highlights of 30 Years of Photoworks is its look at photography’s cultural landscape through essays and features that explore the past, present, and future of image-making. From the organisation’s work with schools and communities to its expansive thinking on where photography is headed, the Annual offers both newcomers and long-time enthusiasts a thoughtful, beautifully curated journey.
With 177 pages of striking imagery, thought-provoking essays, and rich historical context, this edition is not just a book — it’s a celebration of creativity and connection through photography. Whether you’re a collector, a practitioner, or simply someone who loves looking at compelling images, Photoworks Annual 32 is a meaningful addition to your bookshelf.
Discover 30 Years of Photoworks and become part of a community that continues to champion photography for everyone.
