Frost On My Windows by Peter Andrew Jeschke
I have spent the past eight winters capturing images of natural exterior light refracting through frost crystals that grow on my old farmhouse windows. The frost grows when warm moist air escapes the house at night and freezes upon contact with the outer frigid glass. Window frost crystals are only the tiniest fraction of an inch thick, yet their infinitely varied crystalline structures profoundly affect the passage of light, producing strikingly colorful compositions with three-dimensional depth effects. Alas......with the new day’s warmth.....this fantastical icy artwork melts and vanishes in the sun.

Following are some examples of Nature’s artwork, created in the form of wood-framed paintings, on glass substrates, using clear water as a medium, then backlit with Nature’s own brilliant everchanging colors. Image 0500 below shows the full canvas on which Nature works - a glass windowpane about 14.5 inches (37 cm) across. I capture my images from inside the house with no artificial light. I have not manipulated these images except to crop, adjust tone and clean up distracting imperfections in the old glass. The colors, shapes, forms and compositions are created by Nature. Much more of the process and a full analysis of why I believe Nature can create art is in my upcoming “Frost On My Windows” coffee table book.

Peter has taken photographs since he was a teenager, but only much later in life has he turned photography into a profession. He explains his long wait by saying, “I could not in good conscience subject my family to a “starving artist” phase.” After enrolling in college at age 25, he pursued his BSc and MSc in Earth Sciences at the University of New Hampshire and had a long and successful professional career as a geophysicist. Peter and his wife shuttle between their homes in New Hampshire, USA and Meghalaya, India.

Peter is happiest practicing miksang (contemplative photography), anywhere quiet, capturing images of bugs, cracks in paint, dew drops, floating leaves or patterns in beach sand. He is currently exploring for and documenting “natural art” formed without intent by natural or accidental processes.

Peter began showing photographic prints of frost in galleries in 2018. In 2021, his first major solo exhibition took place at Stride Arts Exhibition Hall in New York City. In 2024, he began submitting his work to photography contests. As of this writing he is a finalist in the 2024 Nature Photographer of the Year Award in the Landscape and Portfolio categories and is on the shortlist in the 2024 Close-up Photographer of the Year competition in the Intimate Landscape and Studio Art categories. Peter was awarded six titles in Exposure One’s 2024 Photographer of the Year contest: Photographer of the Year in the Nature and Photojournalism categories; the People’s Choice in the Portrait and Photojournalism categories; a Silver in the Portrait category; and a Bronze in the Travel category. He won the Director’s Award in PhotoPlace Gallery’s 2024 Abstraction Exhibition.
