Behind the Shot: Creek, 2024
Florida Boys is a solo exhibition of my new work on view at Baker–Hall in Miami through November 22. The series gathers staged photographs made across Florida’s backroads between 2020 and 2025, tracing an imagined boyhood through the state’s forests, springs, and swamps. This photograph, Creek, was made early on with a group of young guys–three of whom I met for the first time that morning. I found them through Instagram, scrolling through tagged posts and mutual friends, searching for people who felt bound to Florida’s strange DNA. I wanted collaborators, not subjects; people who could help me explore what coming of age looks like or could look like in the South. We drove north toward Fisheating Creek, stopping to swim, blasting music, eating drive-through burgers along the way. I didn’t process the film from that trip for nearly three years, but I knew something had shifted on that drive. I’d begun to see Florida differently.
