Over the course of three trips to Cuba, I came to understand the country not only as a photographer, but as a student of its colors, rhythms, and contradictions.

Cuba is a land of “was” and “now.” There is the Cuba that existed before the revolution: grand colonial buildings, wide boulevards, ornate theaters, and music pouring into the streets. Even as the architecture fades, daily life carries a rhythm and energy found nowhere else.

The revolution radically altered Cuba’s social structure, and many of its historic buildings have been left to crumble, some beyond repair. Yet the soul of the country—the warmth, resilience, and spirit of its people—remains vivid.

Cuba is a block party in the street, dancing and sipping rum, a trumpet player on the Malecón at sunset, Juanita—86 years old showing me a faded photograph of her as young girl in Trinidad, and in the fishermen of Cojímar cleaning their gear after an early morning at sea.

Cuba is young girls studying ballet, children training in boxing gyms and circus schools, and musicians rehearsing in deserted theaters. As a photographer in Cuba, the real story for me was in the gestures, the movement, and the rhythm of ordinary life.

In these moments, the Cuba of the past and the Cuba of the present exist side by side. Political systems change, buildings age, and history leaves its mark. But in the streets, homes, schools, and gathering places, the character of the Cuban people endures.
