PhotoMidwest is a cornerstone of photographic education and community engagement in Madison and the greater Midwestern region. Established in 1998 as the Center for Photography at Madison and later renamed in 2014, the organization has grown into a vibrant nonprofit hub dedicated to advancing the art and craft of photography. Its mission is rooted in fostering creativity, technical proficiency, and collaboration among photographers of all levels—from enthusiastic beginners to seasoned professionals.

The educational offerings at PhotoMidwest are both diverse and comprehensive. Throughout the year, the organization hosts a variety of photography classes and workshops that explore a wide range of techniques and genres. Participants can enroll in weekly evening courses or more intensive weekend and week-long sessions that take place both in the studio and on location. Each class emphasizes hands-on learning, with assignments that challenge students to refine their vision and technique. Constructive critiques play an essential role, helping students understand composition, lighting, and storytelling while learning from instructors and peers in a supportive environment.

PhotoMidwest’s facilities are a major asset to its programs. The center features a fully equipped wet darkroom, a digital lab with professional-grade printers and scanners, and a large meeting and classroom space ideal for lectures, group critiques, and community events. Members also benefit from open lab hours and orientations, allowing them to access the studio, gallery, and darkroom resources for personal projects.

The organization’s biennial PhotoMidwest Festival stands as a celebrated event, uniting photographers from across the region for exhibitions, talks, and workshops. Beyond structured programs, the organization nurtures a community of passionate image-makers who come together to exchange ideas and share work. With its combination of educational rigor, technical resources, and collaborative spirit, PhotoMidwest continues to inspire and elevate photography throughout the Midwest.
