The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan offers a Photography Program that merges artistic expression with research, innovation, and social engagement. Situated within one of the world’s leading research universities, the program encourages students to explore photography as both an art form and a powerful medium for communication and change. The Stamps School fosters a collaborative environment where experimentation is valued, and students are guided to push the boundaries of lens-based media through conceptual, technical, and interdisciplinary approaches.

Students in the Photography area gain a strong foundation in traditional darkroom techniques while mastering contemporary digital processes. Courses cover a broad spectrum—from analog black-and-white film development and alternative printing methods to digital imaging, studio lighting, and large-format photography. The curriculum emphasizes both technical excellence and the cultivation of personal vision, enabling students to use photography as a means of storytelling and social commentary.

Critical thinking is a cornerstone of the program. Students engage with the history and theory of photography, exploring its evolution from documentary practice to experimental and post-digital art.
